Responsibilities
- Design and build high-performance services: design, develop and maintain scalable gRPC and REST APIs powering core insurance services, taking ownership of complex services and their evolution.
- Own delivery at system level: lead microservices and larger system components end to end, from requirements and architecture through implementation, deployment and operational ownership in production.
- Contribute to technical direction: provide input on technology choices, design patterns and service boundaries, and participate in architecture discussions led by Tech Leads and Architects.
- Mentor and elevate the team: coach mid-level and junior engineers through design reviews, pairing and constructive code reviews.
- Champion engineering excellence: establish and enforce best practices in automated testing, observability, CI/CD and operational readiness.
- Lead in production: act as a senior escalation point for complex incidents and drive root-cause analysis, reliability improvements and cost or performance optimisation.
- Ensure compliance and security: embed security policies, coding standards and regulatory requirements of the financial and insurance sector into design decisions from the start.
Must have

- Proven track record designing and evolving gRPC and REST APIs at scale, including ownership of complex service-level design decisions.
- Expert-level understanding of distributed systems, microservices architectures, event-driven design and cloud-native patterns.
- Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes and modern DevOps workflows, including production troubleshooting at scale.
- Strong experience with PostgreSQL (data modelling, performance tuning) and message queues such as Kafka or RabbitMQ.
- Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and driving adoption of engineering best practices.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a passion for clean, efficient, maintainable systems.
- Regular and responsible use of AI tools to improve productivity and quality of outcomes, and the ability to guide others in doing the same.

- Deep familiarity with observability tooling such as Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry or Jaeger.
- Cloud platform experience (AWS, GCP, Azure), ideally including cost optimisation.
- Infrastructure as code: Terraform, Helm.
- Experience leading technical initiatives across multiple teams or contributing to platform-level decisions.
- German language skills are a plus.
